Summer Project

Our summer project 2016 was to design a cyborg.
The task was to have at least 20% human parts or at least 20% mechanical parts in the finished design as well as having a backstory, details to the character, setting that the character is going to live in, and a fully textured 3d Model by the end of the summer holiday.

To start of the project I wanted to get myself a good idea of what kind of environment my cyborg is going to live in.
Which led me to make the mood board as shown below.
The mood board helped me to come to the conclusion that the environment must be as high tec as possible.
The most important part for me here and for my backstory of the character was the fact that there is a very clear gap between the rich and the poor in terms of their living conditions.
I imagined that it would be a nice idea to have a very modern environment with lots of run down places.

The most inspiration here was for me the environment from Deus ex.

I then started to mind map a few ideas that I gathered so far.

  • service cyborg - or a security cyborg even
  • fairly humanoid body and programmed mind
  • speakers out of the cheeks or set together face
  • if need be weaponize able
  • female
  • being used to shield areas from the general public or to deal with riots and conflicts
  • mostly humanoid body
  • service cyborgs with programmed minds instead of fully armoured
  • robotic mind

For robotic parts I then made this mood board
I especially came to like pictures like the one of the women laying on the floor in the middle.
I think several plates of skin put together give an extremely elegant and robotic feeling to the character, which was something I definitely wanted to add to my cyborg.

I therefore started looking for ideas of creations other people did in the past and put my personal favourites together in the following mood board.

My idea slowly started to drift of the "service robot" or "security cyborg" and changed into the idea to create a rebellious female cyborg of a resistance of some kind.

I did a few doodles to the theme that I had in mind before I decided to change it to the "rebellious" cyborg.

I did like the general idea of the suit but found that it is kind of unfitting for the cyborg I wanted to create.

Doodle of her face.

Working on the new theme I then came up with the following design.
The design process was very difficult to capture since I just started sketching digitally and just added more and more to it over time.
Below you can see the T shaped concept of the character called "Raina"

I decided to give her a fully robotic right arm with a laser point within her hand.
She would be able to shoot from it and also use it defensively.
It was important for me that her arm doesn't look to new and polished.

In my rework of her sketch I tried to implement a few elements that would make the figure easier to read as well as an overall work over her bodysuit, headpieces and pretty much everything that isn't her hair.
Her right arm is completely robotic as well as parts of her legs, face and the booster on her bag which is to help her run fast.
I also added a piece of cloth around her waist to balance out the figure.

☆ Work during the summer holiday ☆

My personal Goal through out the summer holiday was to improve my art style, practice digital art with the main focus on line art and anatomy as well as personal studies in my sketchbooks.

May:

In May I mainly focused on trying out different brushes and sketches in my sketchbook as well as experimenting with colours and painting.

Drawing of own character

Practice of different materials and features of photoshop

Fan illustration of character from Tokyo Ghoul

Painting practice

June:

June was again mainly focused on practising colours and painting process as well as sketchbook work.

Fan art of Shinozaki from Kiznaiver

Painting practice with new brush sets.

July:

Since I was on holiday for that month I only worked in my sketchbook.

August:

Most productive month in terms of digital art practice and character design practice.
(sketches to the different character design process can be found in the sketchbook #5 video)

Line art process of my character Nerida
 Finished drawing

Line art process and colour process of the character Kai

Digital art to one of my character designs

Line art practice to my character Camilla

Line art to my character Fae.
 coloured version.

 Full body version

More practice on line art.

September:

Set myself a one week challenge to fill up a new sketchbook involving studies only and finishing fanart.

Overall I can saw that I am satisfied with my progress over the duration of the summer holiday as well as completing two sketchbooks and starting a study sketchbook.
Painting and especially grey scale painting will require more work and also realistic sketching/ painting.
